How Important Is All This?

Sexuality is one of the big issues of our time. It is important for Christians to both listen to our creator God speaking through his word and to engage with the wider society on topics that matter. It’s fairly obvious that sex, sexuality and identity are big themes, not just of cultural debate, but of common human experience. They are things that affect us all.

There are debates going on in many churches and denominations about how to correctly interpret scriptural teaching on sexuality and related issues. Many are asking themselves how they can love gay people well.

The God we meet in the Bible has plenty of wisdom for us about how we are to relate to one another sexually and how our identity is shaped, and we want to open up these truths to challenge some of our cultural assumptions.

Some think that sex is simply a private ethical issue and that we should just agree to disagree on whether sex outside of a lifelong marriage between a man and a woman is a godly thing. However, we believe that it’s much more important than that. Sex within marriage is at the heart of one of the most significant pictures God uses to describe his relationship with his people. If we distort the picture, we lose sight of God’s wonderful love and truth.

so will your God rejoice over you.’

The authority of the Bible, the very gospel message, and our ability to communicate and demonstrate God’s love for the world is at stake.
